  • Installing polyaspartic coatings is much different than installing other polymer coatings. Not only do polyaspartics tend to have shorter working time than other coatings, but they should also be mixed and staged differently.

To help ensure your jobs involving polyaspartics are a success, it’s important to understand these differences. Consider the following before your next installation:

  • The Challenge
Paula LeDuc Fine Catering & Events was in need of new flooring at its Emeryville, CA facility. Existing coatings and systems in the dishwashing area, walk-in coolers and wash down area had outlived their useful life and were showing significant signs of wear, posing safety risks.

The dishwashing area’s thin film coating had worn off, exposing the concrete substrate below to moisture. The walk-in coolers’ finish coat was highly worn and posed a slip hazard. Its cove base had deteriorated and needed to be repaired to restore functionality and cleanability. The wash down area floor was significantly worn and damaged by moisture.

Since the business operates seven days a week preparing meals for various events, the new flooring needed to be installed quickly. Extra downtime could have impacted profits.

  • Rock-Tred’s Chem-Thane line of polyaspartic coatings is designed to meet a variety of installation requirements in diverse environments. Whether the job requires a low temperature cure in a freezer, a flexible finish over a Rock-Tred Soft Floor, or a hot and humid outdoor install on a patio, Rock-Tred has formulated a system to meet the challenge.

There are some common traits shared among all Chem-Thane polyaspartic coatings:

  • Failures happen. They happen in our individual lives and they happen within the context of a business and other organizations. NASA’s Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia accidents are examples of catastrophic project failures within a highly skilled, technical and advanced organization. A tremendous amount of effort was poured into each one of those projects, which of course included money but also meticulous project design, planning and execution. But failure still happened, and it happened with tragic results, which at the time put that organization’s competence into question.

  • ROCK-TRED has partnered with Midwest Rake to become a stocking distributor of their new Easy Squeegee line.  We are carrying the Easy Squeegee Frame and 6 different Easy Squeegee Blades as part of our RT Sundries line.  The Easy Squeegee system is an updated design of an old and common tool. Many applicator friendly features are packed into this new design.  Easy Squeegee won a 2018 MIP Most Innovative Products at this years World of Concrete show for all the unique features.  The Easy Squeegee Frame is made of a heavy-duty plastic featuring their Cured Coating Release technology.  This technology allows the Frame to be easily cleaned after use regardless of the coatings material being applied.  Protected metal threads and easy to use thumb screw fasteners, also with Cured Coating Release technology, are employed to lock the Easy Squeegee Blades into the Frame.  The threads and fasteners remain protected to eliminate contact with the wet coatings making Blade changes and clean up much easier.

  • It's always important to understand the intricacies of the materials that you are working with to ensure that your projects go smoothly.  Installation can be simplified by going onto a job site armed with the proper information and having done some up front planning.  The following is a list of best practices and tips when working with polyaspartics that we hope will serve you well in the field.

  • Rock-Tred has two products that are designed to be very easy to use, cure quickly and exhibit amazing bond strength to the repaired area.

    RQP - Rock Quick Patch

RQP-Rock Quick Patch is a 100% solids, non-shrinking repair paste. This product can be applied using a 300 ml x 300 ml caulk gun in the RQP-TS tube set, or can be used by applying with a taping knife from the 32 ounce or 2 gallon kit set.

    Some Product Highlights to Note:

    • Non-Shrinking formula, so . This is great for “sinkers” that occur when using traditional 100% solids epoxy.
    • Can be feathered to zero, so no additional grinding is required.
    • 15 minutes of working time, and will usually be fully cured within 45-60 minutes.
    • Has a very high “hardness” rating (Shore D-85).
    • View Rock-Tred Quick Patch Tech Data Here

    ROCK-MENDER

Rock-Mender is a 100% solids “ultra-fast” curing polyurea. Like the RQP featured above, this product is easily placed using a 300 ml x 300 ml dual component caulk gun or can be conventionally mixed and placed out of our 2 or 10 gallon sets.

  • It will not be long now before the leaves turn and frost appears on the pumpkins. Taking a moment to review three common practices can help ensure your projects remain trouble free.

    1. Conditioning Project Materials - One of the most common mistakes made by contractors is NOT conditioning the project materials. Cold material and warm slab temperatures and vice versa can create problems. Whenever possible, store the materials at the project site for at least 24 hours prior to applying. Exceptions to this rule are when the jobsite is near or below freezing and when using ROCK-CRETE products on jobsites below 50°F. Refer to the Technical Data Sheets for more info on these situations.

  • 2008 seems like a lifetime ago for me. It was in that year that I took control of Rock Tred. It was a company that had been around for a very long time but also a company that had lost its way. It was losing money each year and had no vision for its future. The employees were defeated, and there was no unity in the ranks. This lead to a lack of responsibility and lots of finger pointing.

  • For nearly six years Rock-Tred’s’ Ultra U.V. epoxy top coat has continued to out prove ALL competitors epoxy top coat against Ultra Violet attack. This revolutionary patented formula exhibits UN matched performance, only our line of polyaspartics test better.Ultra U.V. is contractor friendly (built by contractors for contractors) and has a nice “working time” and allows smaller crews to complete projects.

The employees were defeated and there was no unity in the ranks. This lead to a lack of responsibility and lots of finger pointing. In the first 3 months of taking over the business it became crystal clear to me that I would need to replace almost every employee.

  • Last month we discussed in our first part of Project Planning 101, what type of information should be included in a project file. Now we are going to talk about keeping track of equipment, small tools and disposables that go out on a project.A large number of contractors DO NOT do a very good job of tracking these items. As contractors get busier it’s very easy to miss the small details

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued a final rule to curb lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease in America's workers by limiting their exposure to respirable crystalline silica. The rule is comprised of two standards, one for Construction and one for General Industry and MaritimeOSHA estimates that the rule will save over 600 lives and prevent more than 900 new cases of silicosis each year, once its effects are fully realized..

  • In the first two parts of this three part essay, we covered the necessary items to keep a functional and useful job file. This becomes even more important should a future issue develop with a project. The second part was how to track your equipment, small tools and typical throw away items like brushes, roller covers and mix buckets, an area that many newer contractors fail to do.

  • Now that warm weather is here, discover how Chem-Thane P-50 from Rock-Tred will help you win more jobs and make more money. • Concrete is essentially a hard sponge. Like a sponge, it readily absorbs water from any available source unless it can be sealed on all sides. Most new slab-on-grade (or ground) construction incorporates a vapor barrier on the positive side of the concrete slab (the bottom side of the concrete). This vapor barrier is designed to prevent moisture from entering the slab from the ground.

  • “First we kill All the Lawyers”-William Shakespeare may have been on to something, but 2 of my best friends and my favorite cousin may not be too happy.Installing floor and wall coatings today has become increasingly more difficult for several reasons: more competition (some goo, most not so much), higher pricing from suppliers, more demands from these same suppliers to settle your account quicker, less quality labor to draw from and the list goes on and on.

  • Rock-Tred’s new generation Chem-Rock Ultra U.V., ultra-violet resistant epoxy continues to outperform all the competition.

  • Being a contractor today comes with more risk than ever before. As I try and keep up on my industry reading I’m amazed at the nature of some of the lawsuits, but also how many could have been prevented with a little bit of planning. One of the key things that can protect a contractor is a well thought out and written warranty. Most construction related problems that cannot be resolved typically will end up in arbitration or mediation as opposed to actually going in front of a judge.

  • While most of the space here in ROCK-TRED News is usually dedicated to our newest or top selling products and systems, this month we want to talk about some specialty products that can help you in difficult situations.ROCK-TRED has been solving problems for contractors since 1939! Let our experienced TEAM help you with ALL of your coating projects and challenges.

  • Falls in the workplace are the leading cause of injury producing accidents in the U.S, according to the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI). How can end users, architects, specifers and flooring installers adequately know what is “too slippery”? While this topic is very scientific and very detailed, I will try and summarize for this article. “The ratio of the force that maintains contact between an object and a surface and the frictional force that resists the motion of the object” .

  • The rebound hammer method, also commonly referred to the Schmidt Hammer is a test to check the impact strength of a concrete substrate. This hammer has a piston that is engaged easily by the user, then when pushed on to the concrete fires. The scale on the hammer then produces a reading in PSI (pounds per square inch) of the tested area. Low readings could signify faulty strength concrete or hollow spots. These need to be addressed prior to doing any surface prep.

  • As we all begin a New Year with new challenges it is quite common for contractors to try and utilize “left over” products on the shelves to get the early year projects completed without purchasing materials. This makes good economic sense if you have the correct components of the system you need. What makes poor economic sense is trying to mix and match various suppliers’ products to install “epoxy goulash”. Not all epoxy coating products are compatible.

  • As we enter a New Year with new opportunities let us start with the basics of ROCK-TRED products and discuss our family of cleaners only available through ROCK-TRED.75% of all coatings projects will fail due to insufficient bond profile. Before we can even think about turning on today’s high-tech and expensive surface prep equipment it is a good practice to make sure the surface is clean.

  • Applying low permeable floor finishes over concrete can be a treacherous task if one is unaware of the many pit falls that await the inexperienced flooring contractor or do it yourselfer. Each year millions of dollars are lost due to floor finish failures. Failure in low permeability flooring finishes often occurs where there are high moisture levels in the concrete. This high moisture content along with the alkalinity naturally present in concrete can eventually create an aggressive concentrate that migrates to the bond line of the floor finish.

  • Rock-Crete TR — This is a trowel version that is designed for projects requiring ¼” thickness or greater. With the changes made in 2014 to our formulation the Rock-Crete TR is more resin rich and a contractor can complete the entire installation standing up. Application is made with a cam rake and loop roller — hand troweling is not required unless additional quartz is field added to create a stiffer mix only as needed.

  • Concrete is by far the most common structural substrate on which resinous flooring materials are applied. Concrete, in its most basic description, is a mixture of cement, various grades and sizes of aggregate and water. While the makeup of concrete is basic in design, the proper placement, curing and drying of concrete is an extremely complex process requiring a high degree of expertise.

  • Mold and mildew have become a huge concern in construction and maintenance of buildings of all types, including correctional facilities. A mold problem can add costs and delays to a construction project and plague facility and maintenance personnel with an unending maintenance cycle. Mold thrives in warm, damp, poorly ventilated environments such as a shower area in a bathroom.

  • The industrial flooring industry, as a whole, has typically taken the costs and responsibility for these crack repairs on the chin, without questioning who is really to blame for the deficiency. The rule governing this behavior is the “who touched it last” rule, which means – ‘if you coated it, you accepted it!’.Rock-Tred will be exhibiting at the Concrete Decor Show in Indianapolis and were offering our customers free passes! • The seamless system consists of multiple products all built around 100-percent solids epoxy resin. The components must be installed within a 24-hour recoat window in order to achieve a chemical linkage. Typically, after 24 hours, the linkage is no longer available and only a mechanical bond can be achieved. The product components include a waterproof membrane, wall and ceiling materials and cove and flooring resins.
